TOOLING
The Goin' Fishing casting (Product Number 6023) is a 1:125 micro-scale representation of a motorized fishing skiff. Like all models in the Zowee line, it utilizes a snap-fit assembly system rather than traditional metal rivets. The model consists of a diecast metal hull/base and a plastic upper insert that includes the boat's interior and a molded fisherman figure. The wheels are the standard small-diameter black plastic Zowee wheels mounted on thin wire axles. The scale is significantly smaller than the standard 1:64 Hot Wheels line to accommodate the "micro" play pattern intended for the 1972 release.
VARIATIONS
Goin' Fishing is a member of the "Original Eight" Zowee models released in 1972. As such, it was distributed through two primary channels:
- Shell Promotional: These were distributed through Shell gasoline stations. They are typically found in small, individual picture boxes or clear poly-bags. There are no known casting differences between Shell and Retail versions, though Shell versions are more commonly found in the collector market due to high-volume distribution.
- Retail Release: These were sold on standard blister cards featuring the "Zowee" branding. These versions are significantly rarer in original packaging than the Shell counterparts.
COLOR REGISTRY
Documented production colors for the diecast hull are limited to:
- Red
- Blue
INTERNATIONAL
The Zowee line was marketed globally with specific branding changes:
- United Kingdom / Europe: Marketed under the brand name "Fun-Buggies". The casting remains identical, but the packaging features the Fun-Buggies logo.
- Italy: Distributed via Polistil and branded as "Western Willy". These versions are highly sought after by international collectors for their unique card art.
CONDITION KILLERS
The primary "Condition Killer" for Goin' Fishing is the plastic fisherman figure. Because the figure is molded into the upper plastic insert, the fishing rod and the figure's head are extremely prone to snapping off during play.
Additionally, the snap-fit tabs that hold the metal base to the plastic top can become brittle over time; if these tabs snap, the model will "rattle" or separate entirely. Chrome loss on the small plastic wheels is also a common occurrence due to the vacuum-metallizing process used in the early 1970s.
MARKET TRENDS
Values are determined strictly by the integrity of the plastic figure and the presence of original packaging.
- Loose (Good/Fair): $15.00 – $25.00 (Often missing the rod or having paint chips).
- Loose (Mint): $40.00 – $60.00 (Must have perfect figure and high-luster paint).
- Mint in Shell Box: $75.00 – $110.00.
- Mint on Retail Blister Card: $150.00 – $225.00+ (Due to extreme scarcity of retail packaging).
