TOOLING
The Covered Draggin (Casting #6014) is a 1:125 micro-scale vehicle released in the second wave of the Hot Wheels Zowee line. The assembly follows the standard Zowee "snap-fit" architecture, consisting of three primary components: a molded plastic upper body (canopy), a chrome-plated plastic engine/exhaust insert, and a plastic chassis. Unlike standard Redline-era vehicles, it utilizes thin, straight metal axles without the signature torsion-bar suspension. The tooling features an oversized V8 engine block and prominent side-exit exhaust headers that extend beyond the body width.
VARIATIONS
The Covered Draggin is one of the "Additional Six" retail-exclusive models released in late 1972/1973. Consequently, it was never included in the Shell Oil "Original Eight" gas station promotion.
- Promotional Variants: None. This casting was not produced for the Shell Oil Zowee promotion.
- Retail Variations: Standard retail issue only. Variations are limited to internal plastic mold numbers and minor base texture differences.
COLOR REGISTRY
Documented production for the Covered Draggin was highly standardized to fit the "Pioneer" aesthetic.
- Body (Canopy): Tan (Light Brown) plastic.
- Base/Engine: Chrome-plated plastic.
- Interior/Underside: Black plastic.
- No other documented body colors exist for the standard U.S. release.
INTERNATIONAL
In international markets, particularly the United Kingdom and parts of Europe, the Zowee line was rebranded and sold under the "Fun-Buggies" label.
- Branding: In the UK Fun-Buggies series, the Covered Draggin was renamed and marketed as "Western Willy".
- Packaging: International cards featured the "Fun-Buggies" logo while retaining the same numeric designation and primary colors.
CONDITION
Due to the brittle nature of early 1970s plastic and the snap-fit design, this casting suffers from specific "Condition Killers":
- Exhaust Headers: The chrome plastic side pipes are the most frequent breakage point; they are thin and often snap off during play.
- Snap-Tabs: The internal plastic clips that hold the body to the base are prone to stress-whitening and snapping if the vehicle is disassembled.
- Chrome Oxidation: The chrome plating on the engine and headers is highly susceptible to "greying" or rubbing off with skin contact.
- Sticker Wear: The small "Covered Draggin" side decals often suffer from adhesive failure or edge peeling.
MARKET TRENDS
Values for Zowees are niche compared to standard 1:64 Redlines, but "Additional Six" models like Covered Draggin command a premium due to their shorter production run.
